Single Spring Garage Door Adjustment

When garage doors won t close all of the way or they close unevenly spring adjustment may be called for.

This is accomplished by opening the garage door as fully as possible until it hits the stop bolt on the track. To adjust your garage door s side mounted springs first open your door fully and secure it in place with a c clamp below the bottom roller. If the garage door isn t opening or closing properly then check the tension on the torsion springs for needed adjustments you may need to have someone helping you to adjust the torsion spring because it can be potentially dangerous. Once your garage door is secured remove the spring hook from the track hanger which will allow you to move the hook and adjust the spring s tension.

If it was opening too quickly move it to the next lower hole. Begin by turning the spring up 1 4 turn until it meets resistance. Many garage door servicemen mark the springs with chalk or paint but you can probably wind the springs in the time it would take me to explain how to read the marks. You must release the tension on the garage door springs before attempting adjustment or replacement.

Adjusting garage door springs is a common repair. If the door was closing too quickly move the spring to the next higher hole on the bracket. You will be winding up on the torsion spring. Otherwise continue winding until you reach a count of 30 this is 7 1 2 turns which is normal for most 7 garage doors.

Retest the door balance as you did in step 1. Newer steel doors with only one strut on top often need only 7 1 4 turns. Adjust the springs on both sides of the door the same way. The springs are located at the top inside part of the garage door.

At this point you will wind the springs. Without the springs the door is very difficult to lift. Once the spring is free of tension remove from its track hanger. Hold the garage door in this position by attaching a c clamp to the track at a point below the lowest door roller wheel.
